I am a teacher in Carmel High School Calcutta for the past 20 years and a teacher trainer with Ummeed. As a Fulbright fellow I have successfully completed the Teaching Excellence and Achievement Programme in the U.S. in 2010. Thereafter I have been part of the Alumni Peace Programme conducted in Eastern India called 'Teach Peace to Reach Peace'.
I have aimed to help student volunteers actively work toward social justice and equality through two U.S. Small Grant programmes on Service Learning, pertaining to Literacy among slum children and Leadership.
The role of the teacher today includes professional development, leadership and collegiality. Teachers are now expected to continue to develop their skills and knowledge throughout their careers. We need to explore the ever expanding knowledge about the holistic nature of learning in which the social, emotional, physical, cognitive and spiritual areas are all taken into account in the development of the next generation of learners. As a teacher trainer I hope to take professional educators beyond technical ability to deeper considerations of what it means to be a teacher in the 21st century.
